Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

He was, of course, referring to the Old Covenant as recorded in the Old Testament. Later in this same passage, James summed up the heart of the matter in Acts 15:19:

It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God (NIV).

The New Covenant we have through Christ is far superior to the Old Covenant. 1 Whereas even strict adherence to Old Testament Law was still insufficient, Christ’s grace is more than sufficient. 2 Therefore, James rightly observed that teaching new believers to adopt the rules and regulations from the Old Covenant would only hinder their relationship with the Lord. So why do you suppose today’s churches cannot seem to justify our current church model without drawing heavily on Old Testament, pre-church scriptures?

For example, the New Testament church did not require any kind of special building (such as a temple) because they had the revelation that the believers themselves were the real temple of God. This was a huge step forward from the way God’s people worshiped him in the Old Testament. God had been longing to break out of his box and live in the midst of his people ever since the temple was first constructed. 3 Jesus predicted the glorious day when God’s people would no longer worship him in a temple. He talked about it with the Samaritan woman in John 4:21–23:
